Entrance Requirements
The Guildhall at SMU is designed to train already talented students to become immediately productive digital game developers. The program is just like the industry - intense, results oriented, and only for the dedicated few.
Applicants Must Demonstrate
- Proficiency in English. Students for whom English is not the native language are expected to take an internationally recognized English language test such as TOEFL or IELTS. A score of at least 550 (paper test) or 213 (computer test) on the TOEFL is required for admission consideration.
- College level coursework or equivalent work experience is required.
- Outstanding applications with at least two years of college coursework will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- A passion for a career in the digital game industry.
International Students
For students requiring a U.S. visa, it is mandatory that the following forms be completed and returned with the application to The Guildhall at SMU:
- Financial Certification for Study at SMU (form must be completed, notarized, converted in U.S. dollars) (PDF Format)

All Specializations
Part of your application will include a one-page essay describing your experience related to electronic games and game development. You are also required to submit three (3) letters of recommendation.
Specific instructions for submitting examples of your work will be made available as part of the application process.
Art Creation Specifics
Your portfolio will consist of a completed project that we will assign along with any other examples of your work that showcase your talent. These examples may be digitally based and/or original art executed in traditional media (drawing, charcoal, clay, etc.), showing a variety of subjects and styles. Portfolios will not be returned, so be sure to keep a copy for yourself.
Level Design Specifics
Your portfolio will consist of a completed project that we will assign, plus any other examples of your work that showcase your talents. These examples can be completed playable levels, an RPG campaign with supporting materials, a playable map, or whatever else strikes your fancy.
Software Development Specifics
Your portfolio will consist of a completed project that we will assign, plus any other examples of your work that showcase your talents. Code samples in any structured language will be acceptable, however code related to games is preferred. Portfolios will not be returned, so be sure to keep a copy for yourself.
