2D Games are a first term project when artists and level designers work together. Using the Scrolling Game Dev. Kit they learn to create sprites, tiled textures and gameplay to create unique and entertaining games.
Level Design students focus on what makes a game fun, game play, game structure, storytelling, and player immersion. Students master level editing tools to control level flow, game mechanics, texturing, and environmental design/layout. After the first two terms, level designers can concentrate on either art or scripting.
Level designers make the game world feel as convincing as possible. They do this in part by creating world assets. Students create these objects using applications such as 3-D studio max and/or game engine editors, including Unreal, Half-Life 2, and Quake.
Level design students practice documenting maps, flow, scripting, character objectives, architecture, sound, artistic concepts, and anything pertaining to gameplay. Above: selected excerpts from a level designer's document describing a level of his team's Unreal 2004 Mod, "Blood Ritual."
